Penhoët Penalized for Irregular Sprint at Dauphiné Criterium
Updated June 10, 2025
Paul Penhoët of Groupama FDJ received a 500 CHF fine, a yellow card, and was relegated to 116th place after stage 2 of the Dauphiné criterium due to an “irregular sprint.” The incident occurred during the stage to Issoire, the frist chance for sprinters in the event, where Lidl-Trek controlled the final stretch, leading to Jonathan Milan’s victory.
According to reports, tension was high among riders vying for position behind Milan. Penhoët, despite finishing fifth, was cited for deviating from his line, obstructing, and endangering another rider.
Team DS Benoît Vaugrenard stated the team’s disagreement with the jury’s decision. He said they believed Penhoët was primarily defending his position. “We take note of the decision even if we have difficulty understanding it because he was mainly trying to defend his position,” Vaugrenard said.
Vaugrenard added, “We’re disappointed because he doesn’t deserve this. We’ll keep the positives, namely the good work of the teammates, and the fact that Paul didn’t have any problems on a course with a 3,000-meter elevation gain.”
Penhoët also finished tenth on stage 1, where Tadej Pogačar secured the win. Vaugrenard remains optimistic about Penhoët’s performance in the Dauphiné criterium. “He’s going well, the coin just needs to fall in the right direction, and we believe in it,” said Vaugrenard.
Per Strand Hagenes of Visma-Lease a Bike and Nils Politt from UAE Team Emirates XRG also received fines and yellow cards for “improper conduct” during stage 2.
