Pennsylvania Seeks Public Input on Future of Rail Travel
Harrisburg,PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking public input as it crafts a comprehensive 2025 rail plan,a blueprint for passenger and freight rail service, funding, safety, and economic growth over the next two decades.
The plan will shape state and federal investments in PennsylvaniaS rail infrastructure, and PennDOT is eager to hear from residents about their priorities.
“We want to ensure that the 2025 rail plan reflects the needs and aspirations of Pennsylvanians,” said Alexis Campbell, a PennDOT spokeswoman. “This is an opportunity for the public to have a direct say in the future of rail travel in our state.”
A virtual informational meeting will be held on December 10th from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM,providing an update on current rail services and outlining the goals of the 2025 plan.
One key element of the plan is the addition of a second daily roundtrip train between Pittsburgh and New york City. This expansion, expected to begin in late 2026, is generating excitement among rail advocates.
“This is a game-changer for Western Pennsylvania,” said Mark Spada, president of Western Pennsylvanians for Passenger Rail. “Increased rail service will boost tourism, create jobs, and provide a more sustainable transportation option.”
Spada’s organization is urging PennDOT to prioritize several initiatives in the 2025 plan, including:
enhanced Connectivity: Expanding bus service to stations along the Pittsburgh-New York City route to improve access for riders.
Station Upgrades: Renovating and modernizing stations between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, as well as in Erie, to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
* Collaborative marketing: Developing a joint marketing strategy with state agencies like the tourism department and local organizations to promote the enhanced passenger rail service.
To support the second daily Pennsylvanian, PennDOT is investing $200 million in improvements to the Keystone West corridor, owned by Norfolk Southern Corp. These improvements, including a new main line track at Pittsburgh’s Amtrak Station and upgrades to signaling and track infrastructure, aim to reduce delays for both passenger and freight trains.
The public is encouraged to participate in the December 10th meeting and share their thoughts on the future of rail travel in Pennsylvania.
