Fraternity Pledging Rigs Used as Drug Assembly Lines

Investigators determined that organization leaders subverted the traditional student pledging process, transforming integration rituals into a clandestine assembly line for packaging narcotics. Thomas Robinson, a 22-year-old member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity who served as a new-member educator, directed pledges in March 2024 to purchase supplies at a local Walmart store, including a plastic folding table, glass trays, protective goggles, face masks, and hundreds of plastic bags.

In Robinson’s room, new members learned to break down blocks of cocaine, mix the substance with creatine supplements, and seal more than 200 individual doses during two-day sessions. By the fall 2024 semester, Robinson refined the recruitment method in the fraternity basement by testing the pulse stability of pledges to verify who could weigh drugs accurately, while also requiring them to sign confidentiality agreements that he subsequently destroyed.

Operation Drugs Unlimited and Distribution Across Five Organizations

The Office of the Attorney General of Pennsylvania and the State College Police Department led the two-year investigation named Operation Drugs Unlimited, which established that Agostino Abbatiello served as the primary cocaine supplier for the network. Abbatiello, an alumnus of the Sigma Chi fraternity known on campus as the Godfather, recruited associates to retrieve merchandise from Long Island, New York, while operating out of an independent fraternity branch lacking institutional oversight.

The distribution network spanned five student organizations, including Phi Kappa Theta, which was used initially to establish contacts for purchasing marijuana, the stimulant Adderall, and cocaine. Sales occurred directly among students, fraternity brothers, and attendees of social events at off-campus residences. Law enforcement operations intensified in September 2024 after State College police recruited a confidential informant who executed controlled purchases of cocaine from Robinson through Snapchat and Venmo.

Bail Set for Accused Supplier Following Arrests

Police raided Robinson’s room at the Delta Upsilon fraternity house on December 13, 2024, where he resisted arrest before officers subdued him with a Taser and seized cocaine, Adderall, marijuana, cash, and a loaded .45-caliber handgun. Several co-defendants, including Robinson, Mohammed Huraibi, and Lars Zeepvat, waived their preliminary hearings and provided statements against Abbatiello, according to WJAC.

Abbatiello, 24, remained jailed at the Centre County Correctional Facility from August until September 2026, when Judge Jonathan Grine of the Centre County Court of Common Pleas set his bail at $250,000 during an appearance at the courthouse in Bellefonte. Abbatiello’s defense attorney, Philip Masorti, argued in an emergency bail motion that law enforcement never documented the defendant using or threatening violence or carrying weapons during the two-year investigation. Following the arrests, Sigma Chi suspended its campus activities, while state prosecutors proceeded with criminal charges against the 14 suspects involved in the network.
