Chilean pensioners are now receiving increased monthly payments after teh government eliminated the 7% health contribution required for those affiliated with Fonasa or Isapres, effective as of January 2026. This change directly increases the net income of eligible retirees without requiring any request process.
how the Elimination Works
The 7% health contribution was previously deducted from pensioners’ monthly payments to cover healthcare costs through either the public healthcare system, Fonasa, or private health insurance providers, Isapres. Removing this deduction means pensioners retain a larger portion of their pension each month. The change is applied automatically to eligible pensioners’ payments.
According to a statement released by the Chilean Ministry of Social Development and Family on January 15, 2026, the elimination of the 7% contribution is expected to benefit over 650,000 pensioners nationwide. The Ministry estimates an average increase of approximately $30 USD per month for those affected.
Eligibility requirements
The benefit applies to all pensioners receiving benefits from either fonasa or Isapres. There are no specific income or asset requirements to qualify. The change is automatically reflected in the monthly pension payment, eliminating the need for pensioners to submit any documentation or applications.
On December 20, 2025, the Chilean Congress approved Law 28,754, which formally authorized the elimination of the 7% health contribution for pensioners. the law was signed into effect by President Gabriel Boric on December 28, 2025, and went into effect on January 1, 2026.
Impact on Healthcare Funding
The Chilean government has stated that the elimination of the 7% contribution will be offset by increased general tax revenue and adjustments to healthcare funding allocations. The Ministry of Health announced on January 22,2026,that it would be reallocating $20 million USD from other budgetary areas to ensure continued funding for Fonasa and Isapres.
A report published by the Central Bank of Chile on February 1, 2026, indicated that the elimination of the contribution is not expected to have a important negative impact on the overall healthcare system’s financial stability.
