Pepe Aguilar was met with boos from the audience during a surprise appearance as a special guest at a Peso Pluma concert on April 3, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas.
The event took place at the Frost Bank Center, where approximately 19,000 attendees gathered for the stop of Peso Pluma’s Dinastía Tour. The evening was marked by a symbolic meeting between two different generations of Mexican regional music, though the reception for Aguilar was polarized.
The appearance occurred during a day of significant recognition for Peso Pluma, whose real name is Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija. Prior to the concert, San Antonio authorities officially proclaimed April 3 as Día de Peso Pluma
and presented the artist with the key to the city in recognition of his cultural and musical impact.
A Divided Reception
Peso Pluma introduced Aguilar to the crowd with a message of deep respect, stating that he respected him with his soul, with my life and with my heart
and that it was an honor to present him that night.
Upon taking the stage, Aguilar delivered a conciliatory speech to the audience. He expressed that it was a tremendous pride
to be invited by Peso Pluma and noted that Peso Pluma represents the new generation of Mexican music.
Aguilar emphasized the diversity of the genre, stating, Somos muchas maneras de sonar a México. Él tiene la suya, yo tengo la mía
(We are many ways of sounding like Mexico. He has his, I have mine).
Despite these remarks and an embrace between the two artists, reports and social media videos indicated that a portion of the crowd reacted with heckling and boos during Aguilar’s participation, creating an atmosphere of discomfort in the venue.
Context of the Controversy
The negative reaction from the fans is attributed to comments made by Aguilar five years prior. In those statements, he described corridos tumbados—the style popularized by artists like Peso Pluma—and other emerging trends as música mediocre, chafa y pinche
(mediocre, cheap and crappy music).
At the time, the interpreter of Por mujeres como tú
argued that while he respected the evolution of musical styles, he believed the trend was of low quality. He suggested that truly talented young artists would eventually seek to create something different, distanced from the music he had criticized.
These views created a rift between Aguilar and the exponents of the movement, including Peso Pluma, who has become one of the primary figures of the genre.
In recent years, Aguilar’s public stance began to shift. In 2023, he admitted that there were two or three songs
by Peso Pluma that he liked, preceding the eventual collaboration and invitation to the San Antonio stage.
