Instead, stargazers will find the best opportunities both before and after the shower’s zenith.
While the sheer volume of shooting stars will be reduced outside the peak, a crucial “dark sky window” – a period when moonlight is at its minimum – will be available from July 18 to July 28. This favorable period is thanks to the lunar cycle: the last quarter moon on July 18 will rise at midnight, followed by a new moon on July 24. During this time, only a faint crescent moon will be visible, setting early and allowing for darker skies.
Though, after July 28, the waxing crescent moon will begin to grow, gradually interfering with the visibility of the meteors. This will usher in approximately two weeks of bright, moonlit nights, making it challenging to spot the fainter shooting stars.
Post-Peak Viewing: A second Chance
For those who miss the earlier dark sky window or wish for another chance, the period after the Perseids’ peak also offers potential. The waning gibbous moon will start to move out of the way when it reaches its last quarter phase again on August 16. Although the meteor rates will naturally be declining by this point, any clear nights during that week should still provide glimpses of this spectacular light show.

The Perseid meteor shower is celebrated for its especially swift and brilliant meteors, which streak across the sky at an extraordinary 37 miles per second (60 kilometers per second). These celestial fireworks are the result of tiny particles, shed by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, entering Earth’s atmosphere. As these cosmic dust grains collide with our atmosphere at high speeds, they heat up, vaporize, and release energy, creating the visible streaks of light we certainly know as meteors.
What to Expect in 2025
While the lunar conditions in 2025 are not ideal,they are far from prohibitive. By strategically choosing your viewing times to coincide with the moon’s absence, or even by observing when the moon is present, you are still likely to catch sight of one or two of the year’s moast anticipated shooting stars. Patience and a keen eye will be rewarded with the magic of the Perseids.
