On Friday, a devastating event unfolded in the city of Trujillo, Peru, where the roof of a food area in a mall collapsed, resulting in at least three fatalities and 20 injuries. Authorities reported that the heavy iron structure of the Real Plaza mall unexpectedly caved in on diners, sending shockwaves through the community.

The Interior Minister of Peru, Juan Santiváñez, spoke to the local RPP radio and revealed, “The heavy iron structure of the Real Plaza de the city of Trujillo fell untimely over the diners.”

Regional Health Manager Aníbal Morillo of the La Libertad Region, which includes Trujillo, mentioned that the injured patients suffer from various types of trauma and that efforts are ongoing to rescue those still trapped under the rubble. Local fire officials estimated that the capacity of the premises was between 350 and 400 people, with a significant portion being mothers with children.

Santiváñez also added that more than 150 police officers, along with firefighters and search and rescue dogs were actively working on the scene to assist with the rescue efforts.
