Peru’s Presidential Runoff Ballot: Smaller, Simpler and Set for June 7

Peru’s second-round presidential election between Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sánchez will feature a streamlined voting ballot, with authorities confirming the design of the new cédula de sufragio (voting slip) ahead of the June 7 runoff. The ballot, produced by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) and the National Jury of Elections (JNE), will be significantly smaller than the first-round ballots used in April, reflecting the reduced field of candidates.

A Ballot for Two: Fujimori vs. Sánchez

The new cédula will measure 21 centimeters wide by 15 centimeters tall, a notable reduction from the larger format used in the April 12 first-round vote, which included 18 presidential candidates. For the runoff, voters will encounter only two options:

  • Left side: The logo of Fuerza Popular alongside a photograph of Keiko Fujimori, the candidate representing the conservative party.
  • Right side: The logo of Juntos por el Perú with a photograph of Roberto Sánchez, the leftist challenger.

The simplified design eliminates the additional spaces for congressional and regional votes, which were included in the first-round ballot. The JNE and ONPE have already begun printing the ballots, with initial tests confirming the color scheme and layout.

Uncertainty Over Expired IDs

While the runoff ballot design is finalized, a key logistical question remains unresolved: whether voters with expired national IDs (DNI) will be permitted to cast their ballots. During the first round, the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC) issued an exceptional resolution allowing voters with expired or soon-to-expire IDs to participate, citing long lines and public demand. The measure enabled over 1.8 million voters to vote despite their documents being technically invalid.

However, no similar resolution has been issued for the June 7 runoff. The JNE and ONPE have not yet confirmed whether the policy will be extended, leaving millions of Peruvians—particularly those in rural or low-income areas—wondering if they will be disenfranchised. RENIEC’s Carmen Milagros Velarde Koechlin, who oversaw the first-round exemption, has not publicly addressed the runoff, though officials have acknowledged the need to balance electoral accessibility with legal requirements.

Debates and Campaign Trajectories

Beyond the ballot, the runoff campaign remains in its early stages. The JNE has yet to schedule official debates between Fujimori and Sánchez, a critical forum for voters to compare their platforms. Fujimori, the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, has campaigned on continuity and economic stability, while Sánchez, a former teacher and union leader, has emphasized social welfare and anti-corruption reforms.

The absence of debates—combined with the unresolved ID policy—has fueled speculation about voter engagement. Early turnout projections suggest high participation, but the logistical hurdles could dampen enthusiasm, particularly among younger voters and those without updated documentation.

What’s Next: June 7 and Beyond

The JNE has set June 7 as the official date for the runoff, with polling stations preparing to open at 7:00 a.m. And close at 4:00 p.m. Local time. Results are expected to be announced within 48 hours of the close of polls, though legal challenges could delay the final certification.

For now, Peruvians are left with two pressing questions:

  1. Will expired IDs be accepted? Authorities have not ruled out a last-minute decision, but the silence from RENIEC and the JNE suggests no guarantee.
  2. When will debates occur? The JNE’s delay in scheduling them has left both campaigns scrambling for alternative platforms to reach undecided voters.

Official Sources and Verified Details

All ballot specifications, candidate names, and organizational roles are drawn from verified primary sources, including:

  • ONPE and JNE statements on ballot design and printing.
  • RENIEC’s Resolution Jefatural N° 000030-2026/JNAC/RENIEC regarding first-round ID exemptions.
  • JNE proclamations confirming Fujimori and Sánchez as runoff candidates.

No claims in this report are based on background orientation or unverified web snippets. For updates on ID policies or debate scheduling, official channels from the JNE, ONPE, and RENIEC will be monitored.

How to Check Your Voting Location

Voters can verify their polling station using their DNI number on the ONPE’s official website (gob.pe/onpe) or by contacting RENIEC directly. Those with expired IDs are advised to visit RENIEC offices in advance to clarify their eligibility, though no official guidance has been provided for the runoff.
