Peruvian Football in Crisis: FPF and 1190 Sports Dispute Threatens Liga 1 2024 Season

Peruvian Football in Crisis: FPF and 1190 Sports Dispute Threatens Liga 1 2024 Season

Title: Turmoil in Peruvian Football: 1190 Sports and FPF Clash Over Contract Resolution

In an unexpected turn of events, 1190 Sports has accused the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) of not fulfilling any of its contractual obligations, while the latter has requested a extraordinary meeting to discuss the legal procedure for resolving the contract with 1190 Perú I Latam S.A.C. The company, however, maintains that it has no influence over the resolution of the contract.

The saga began on January 12, when a letter signed by four members of the FPF’s board of directors was sent to its president, Agustín Lozano. The letter highlighted two main concerns: delays in payments to clubs and the lack of guarantees for the contract’s validity in the current year. This is not the first time such issues have been raised. In November, seven clubs from the Liga 1 (excluding Sporting Cristal) met to discuss the delayed monthly payments, with six of them deciding to pressure the FPF to resolve the contract with 1190 Sports.

Adding fuel to the fire, Melgar FC has initiated an arbitration process against both 1190 Sports and the FPF, alleging non-compliance with their agreement on the payment of transmission rights for the 2023 season. Despite 1190 Sports’ CEO, Hernán Donnari, claiming in December that "we owe nothing to any club," the president of Melgar, Ricardo Bettocchi, has stated that the club is owed almost the entire amount for the 2023 season.

As the dust settles from the initial delay in the Liga 1’s kickoff (originally scheduled for the last weekend of January but pushed back to February 7), rumors are swirling once again. Journalist César Vivar reported that the FPF’s tie with 1190 Sports would be severed this week, leading to a postponement of the tournament’s start and a new fixture. Speculations even hinted at a possible return of Consorcio Fútbol Perú (GOLPERÚ) with a new ally, Disney+.

However, 1190 Sports maintains that it is committed to fulfilling its contractual obligations, which are backed by FIFA, CONMEBOL, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS). The company argues that the FPF has not complied with its own contractual obligations, particularly in terms of tax and commercial aspects, which have negatively impacted the exploitation of audiovisual content rights and the overall football scene in Peru.

In response to the FPF’s proposed solution to expedite payments and meet deadlines, 1190 Sports argues that the federation has not taken the necessary steps to create an attractive championship that would appeal to fans, with a fixture that prioritizes their interests and subscription, and coherent programming of dates and kickoff times. The company also points to the inclusion of Ayacucho FC and Binacional via a judicial mandate, which has led to the current 19-team Liga 1 structure, with the fate of these two clubs still uncertain.

As the drama unfolds, the focus now shifts to the upcoming meeting of the FPF’s board of directors, where six Liga 1 clubs will discuss the future of the contract with 1190 Sports. The primary concern remains the alleged non-payment of dues. Last Monday, a meeting was held at the Videna between the FPF and Liga 1 clubs, with Jean Ferrari, the administrator of Universitario, stating that there are issues of non-compliance with multiple clubs, which is driving the decision-making process.

Amidst all the chaos, one question remains: will the start of the Torneo Apertura be delayed once again? Sources from the Liga de Fútbol Profesional have assured that there is no possibility of further postponement or a new fixture. The teams are already preparing based on their known opponents.

This escalating conflict threatens the stability and future of Peruvian football. The ⁣accusations⁣ levelled against 1190 Sports, coupled with the growing dissatisfaction among Liga 1 clubs, paint a worrying ‍picture.

Unless resolved swiftly and transparently, the situation risks further damaging Peru’s football ecosystem. urgent dialog and mediation between the FPF, ⁢1190 Sports, and ‌Liga 1 clubs are crucial. Failure to address these issues could ultimately lead ⁢to financial instability,⁣ player discontent, and ultimately, harm the sport’s reputation‌ on a national level.

Peruvian football deserves better. Clear interaction, accountability, and a commitment‌ to finding‌ mutually beneficial solutions are essential for restoring confidence and ensuring the long-term prosperity⁢ of the stunning game in Peru.

The Future of Peruvian Football Remains Uncertain

This impasse between 1190 Sports and the FPF casts a long shadow over the future of peruvian football. While 1190 Sports asserts its commitment to its contractual obligations, the FPF’s calls for a new contractual arrangement and the grievances of clubs like Melgar FC paint a picture of deep mistrust and dissatisfaction.

The implications are far-reaching. A potential contract termination could lead to further delays in the Liga 1 season, hindering the progress of Peruvian teams and players. Furthermore, the possibility of a swift return to GOLPERÚ,though speculative, raises questions regarding long-term stability and financial sustainability in the sport.

Ultimately, the path forward hinges on two crucial factors: a clear and impartial resolution of the contractual disputes and a willingness from both parties to prioritize the interests of Peruvian football above all else. A resolution that fosters open interaction, addresses the concerns of clubs, and secures a financially robust future for the sport is essential to safeguarding the passion and legacy of Peruvian football.
