Health authorities in Pescara, Italy, have activated emergency prophylaxis procedures following two separate cases of meningitis, one of which resulted in the death of a 51-year-old woman.

The woman, identified as Giovanna Romano, died on Saturday, April 5, 2026, at the Pescara hospital. According to reports, she suffered from a particularly aggressive and rare form of meningitis.

Medical records indicate that her condition became extremely critical immediately after the first symptoms appeared. Despite the efforts and investigations conducted by healthcare workers, her clinical state deteriorated rapidly, leading to her death.

In response to this case, the Pescara Local Health Authority (ASL) implemented prescribed health protocols. This included identifying individuals who had been in close contact with the patient and administering prophylaxis to them.

Meningococcal Meningitis Case in Chieti Teenager

A second, separate case involves a 15-year-old boy from Chieti who remains hospitalized in serious condition. He is currently receiving care in the pediatric intensive care unit at the Pescara hospital.

Meningococcal Meningitis Case in Chieti Teenager

The teenager has been diagnosed with meningococcal meningitis. Health officials noted that this specific form is the only type of meningitis transmitted through the air.

The patient was first admitted to the emergency room of the Santissima Annunziata Hospital in Chieti during the night between Thursday, April 3, and Friday, April 4, 2026. He presented with severe symptoms, including:

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • General malaise
  • Altered state of consciousness

Due to a quick diagnosis, medical staff were able to initiate treatment immediately before transferring the patient to the regional pediatric referral center. While doctors report that the young man is responding positively to advanced pharmacological therapies, his prognosis remains guarded.

Public Health Response and Monitoring

The ASL has executed a comprehensive contact tracing operation for the 15-year-old patient. This involved reconstructing the teenager’s movements to identify family members, friends, and other close contacts, all of whom were provided with antibiotic prophylaxis.

Specific institutions linked to the student have been notified and subjected to health interventions. The student attends the Savoia Technical Institute in Chieti and a gym in Pescara.

As part of the containment effort, the sports facilities in Pescara have been sanitized. Health monitoring has also been performed for teachers, students, and other users of these facilities to prevent further transmission.

The rapid progression of meningitis is a critical concern for public health officials. The severity of these cases highlights the importance of immediate medical intervention when symptoms such as high fever and altered consciousness appear, as seen in the Chieti case where early diagnosis allowed for the immediate start of treatment.
