Former Nigeria Coach Peseiro Praises Lookman, Hints at Egyptian Return
Former Nigerian national team coach Jose peseiro has lauded Atalanta striker Ademola Lookman, calling his 2024 African Player of the Year award well-deserved.
Peseiro, who previously coached Egyptian powerhouse Al-Ahly, believes Lookman’s success stems from the freedom he’s been given to showcase his talents.
“I believe that giving Lookman freedom of movement allows him to show his quality,in terms of decision-making or execution,” Peseiro told Sport Italia newspaper. “The club and Gasperini have given Lookman the habitat to grow as a player in all aspects.”
Peseiro, who coached Lookman during his time with the Nigerian national team, emphasized the striker’s contributions both domestically and internationally.
“I think Lookman’s win was deserved for his performance, whether it was with Atalanta and his club or with his country, Nigeria,” he added.
Peseiro also dropped a bombshell, hinting at a potential return to Egypt in the near future.
In a televised statement, Peseiro teased a “surprise” and promised to be back in Egypt soon to assess the talent pool.”I am preparing for a surprise, but I will not reveal it now. I promise you that I will be in Egypt soon and I will see the level of players in Egypt, as well as the elite level of the league championship,” he said.The former Al-Ahly coach expressed his admiration for the Egyptian league and his desire to contribute to its growth.
“It is an honor for me to come back and coach in the Egyptian league, and you will see me in Egypt soon, and we will make the best of the team we lead,” he added.
Peseiro also weighed in on the debate surrounding mohamed Salah’s omission from the African Player of the Year shortlist,praising the Liverpool star’s global stature.
“Mohamed Salah is a great player, and he plays for one of the biggest clubs in England. We cannot evaluate his level with an award and we must respect FIFA’s numbers,” he said.
While acknowledging Salah’s brilliance,Peseiro defended Lookman’s victory,emphasizing the striker’s extraordinary goal-scoring record.
“Mohamed Salah is known in the world, and it was not in our mind to crown Lookman with the best award in Africa. He only won the award with 3 goals, but we respect the number,” he concluded.
