Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is reportedly consumed by “paranoia” over the possibility of being replaced by Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, according to a report in the New York Post cited by multiple news outlets. The report, based on current and former administration officials, states that Hegseth’s anxiety about Driscoll’s standing within President Donald Trump’s orbit helped drive the recent ouster of top military officials, including Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, Gen. David Hodne, and Maj. Gen. William Green.

This is all driven by the insecurity and paranoia that Hegseth has developed since the Signalgate scandal in March 2025, one official told the Post, referring to the group chat incident involving national security officials and an accidentally included reporter. Hegseth has become fixated on Driscoll as a potential successor, despite being told by the White House he cannot fire Driscoll, at least for the moment.

Hegseth’s strained relationship with Driscoll has been building for months, with Driscoll widely viewed as a natural contender to succeed him. A source close to the Trump administration told the Post that Hegseth is very concerned about being fired and knows that Driscoll is one of the top contenders to succeed him, leading Hegseth to target anyone he perceives to be close with Driscoll.

The Pentagon offered little public explanation for the leadership shake-up, stating only that “it was time for a leadership change.” However, reports indicate the moves were part of a broader pattern of dysfunction under Hegseth’s leadership, which has been described as marked by chaos and distrust among civil servants and senior military officials.
