Peter James, a broadcasting legend in London, Ontario, has died at the age of 83. Known affectionately as the “Godfather of Sports,” James passed away on , surrounded by his family, just hours after sharing his love for his wife, Carmen.
James’s career spanned decades and multiple radio and television stations throughout Southwestern Ontario, beginning in St. Catharines before moving to St. Thomas radio where he became known as “Pecos Pete.” He then joined CKSL and CFPL radio in London, followed by a stint at Rogers Cable TV. He returned to CJBK for ten years, cementing his status as a ubiquitous voice in the region’s sports coverage. According to those who knew him, James spent more time on live air than any other broadcaster in the area.
Born to John and Lily Eydt, James was predeceased by his brother, John Eydt, and his in-laws, Joe and Gilda Fossaceca. He is survived by his wife, Carmen, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage, his son Joe, daughter Nicole, and grandchildren Olivia and Luca. He is also remembered by his brother-in-law Enzo (Alexis), Gabriella, Bonnie, Valerie (Lionel) and their families, as well as his adopted son Michael and numerous nieces and nephews, including Nick, Andrew, David, Tracey, Kelly, Laura, and Cari, and Isabella and Adrianna. He was also predeceased by his niece, Lisa.
James was more than just a sports broadcaster; he was a storyteller and an entertainer. Colleagues and friends remember him as someone who “did it right,” an influential figure who witnessed the growth of sports in London and beyond. He possessed a knack for being in the right place at the right time, and approached his work with a passion that, according to James himself, meant he never worked a day in his life.
The London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) are planning to honour James’s legacy. The OHL itself has publicly mourned his passing, recognizing his significant contribution to the sporting landscape of the region. Details of the Knights’ tribute have not yet been released.
A visitation will be held on , from to and from to at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in London. A celebration of his life will take place at the same location on , at , followed by cremation. The family has requested that attendees consider wearing their favourite sports jerseys in his honour.
