The NSW Waratahs continued their impressive start to the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season with a commanding 36-13 victory over the Fijian Drua in Sydney on February 20th. The win marks the Tahs’ second consecutive bonus-point victory, establishing them as early leaders in the competition.

However, the day was particularly poignant for Waratahs number eight Pete Samu, who started the match just hours after the birth of his child. Samu confirmed the joyous news to Stan Sport before the clash, sharing, “Shout out to my wife, she just gave birth today.” Despite the emotional whirlwind, Samu delivered a strong performance, nearly scoring a try but knocking the ball on while reaching for the line.

The Waratahs initially found themselves in a tight contest against the Drua, who proved resilient in the first half. Openside flanker Charlie Gamble opened the scoring for the Tahs in the 10th minute, capitalizing on a dummy pass from the base of the ruck to dart over for a try. The Drua responded swiftly, with winger Taniela Rakuro finishing off a well-executed backline move off an attacking lineout to level the scores at 7-7.

A penalty goal from Drua flyhalf Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula in the 34th minute briefly gave the Fijian side a 10-7 lead. However, the Waratahs regained the advantage before halftime thanks to a moment of brilliance from winger Max Jorgensen. Receiving a long pass, Jorgensen showcased exceptional footwork, sidestepping Rakuro with a dazzling move and outpacing the cover defense to score a stunning try and put the Waratahs ahead 14-10.

The Waratahs thought they had extended their lead on the stroke of halftime, but a video review determined a forward pass had been made in the build-up, denying them another try. Despite this setback, the Tahs emerged from the break with renewed determination.

Armstrong-Ravula added another penalty goal for the Drua early in the second half, narrowing the gap to 13-14. However, the Waratahs then took complete control of the match. Debutant reserve hooker Ioane Moananu made an immediate impact, powering his way over the try line from close range after an impressive 40-meter drive by the Waratahs’ forward pack. This try signaled a shift in momentum, as the Tahs began to dominate possession and territory.

Further tries from Angus Blyth, and a second try each for Moananu and Jorgensen sealed the victory for the Waratahs, demonstrating their attacking prowess and depth. Jorgensen’s performance, in particular, highlighted his growing influence within the team, continuing a strong run of form after a standout performance against Queensland in Round 1.

The Drua, coming off a physically demanding loss to Moana Pasifika in the opening round, appeared to tire in the second half, struggling to contain the Waratahs’ relentless attack. While they showed flashes of brilliance, particularly in the first half, they ultimately lacked the stamina to match the Tahs’ intensity.

Elsewhere in Super Rugby Pacific on February 20th, the Wellington Hurricanes secured a comprehensive 52-10 victory over Moana Pasifika. Playing their first match of the season after a bye in Round 1, the Hurricanes proved too strong for a Moana Pasifika side fielding eight debutants.

Looking ahead, the Western Force will host the Auckland Blues in Perth on Saturday, while the ACT Brumbies will travel to Christchurch to face the Crusaders on Sunday afternoon. The Queensland Reds have a bye in Round 2.

The Waratahs’ strong start to the season, coupled with Samu’s inspiring personal story, has undoubtedly captured the attention of Super Rugby Pacific fans. With two bonus-point wins under their belt, Dan McKellar’s side will be looking to maintain their momentum as they navigate a challenging schedule in the weeks to come. The team’s ability to blend individual brilliance, such as Jorgensen’s electrifying runs, with a cohesive team performance will be crucial to their success.
