Despite sea Pigeon’s multiple Champion Hurdle and chester Cup wins, Easterby recalled the electrifying atmosphere when Sea Pigeon, carrying top weight, clinched the Ebor Handicap. The crowd’s roar, he said, was deafening.
Night Nurse, another of Easterby’s champions, narrowly missed a Cheltenham Gold Cup win in 1981, losing to stablemate Little Owl. easterby also celebrated a Gold Cup victory with Alverton in 1979.Alverton later died after a fall at Becher’s Brook in the Grand National, where he was the favourite.
Over his 46-year career, Easterby trained over 2,500 winners. His first champion Hurdle victory came in 1967 with Saucy Kit, marking the begining of a remarkable career in racehorse training.
