Former Argentine lawmaker Elisa Carrió warned of the risks posed by tech billionaire Peter Thiel following his meeting with President Javier Milei in Buenos Aires, citing concerns about his ideological influence and potential impact on democratic institutions.
Carrió, founder of the Civic Coalition ARI, described Thiel as an “apocalyptic prophet of techno-fascism” and expressed alarm over his growing ties with the Argentine president, particularly given his advocacy for authoritarian-leaning technological governance and skepticism toward liberal democracy.
She emphasized that Thiel’s presence in Argentina, including meetings with Milei and senior officials like Santiago Caputo and Federico Sturzenegger, represents a strategic effort by foreign tech elites to influence national policy under the guise of innovation, and investment.
The warning came after Thiel’s visit to Buenos Aires, during which he attended the River Plate vs. Boca Juniors derby, dined with government officials, and held a scheduled meeting with Milei at the Casa Rosada on April 25, 2026 — their fourth encounter in two years.
Carrió’s remarks were made in an interview with La Nación, where she urged vigilance regarding the convergence of Silicon Valley’s libertarian elite with Milei’s administration, warning that such alliances could undermine Argentina’s democratic safeguards in pursuit of rapid economic transformation.
She specifically referenced Thiel’s ideological alignment with Milei’s vision of positioning Argentina as “the new mecca of the West,” cautioning that this framing may prioritize technological control and deregulation over civil liberties and institutional resilience.
The former legislator called for transparency in the discussions between Thiel and Milei, stressing that public officials must ensure that foreign influence does not compromise national sovereignty or democratic accountability.
