The upcoming bout marks a significant step up in competition for McGhee as he faces the former champion,Petr Yan. The bantamweight fight booking has raised eyebrows among fans.
Sean O’Malley has previously praised McGhee as a “beast” when he debuted in the UFC in 2023.
“This fight makes no sense whatsoever,” one fan said on ‘X’ about the bantamweight matchup.
Some fans question why Yan,so close to title contention,is fighting someone ranked much lower without any ranked wins. One fan suggested a rematch with Cory Sandhagen would be more logical.
“Don’t get the matchmaking at all unless Yan just wanted to be active. I got Yan by finish,” another fan wrote.
Yan faced a similar situation in 2022 when, as the No. 1 contender, he fought No. 11-ranked Sean O’Malley at UFC 280. O’Malley secured a controversial split decision in that fight.
