Peugeot has unveiled two concept vehicles at the Beijing Auto Show that signal its strategic shift toward electric vehicles developed for the Chinese market, with production planned through its joint venture with Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroen.
The Concept 6, described as a sleek estate car, previews a potential successor to the outgoing 508 model, while the Concept 8 represents a flagship electric SUV positioned above the current 5008 in Peugeot’s lineup. Both vehicles feature the brand’s signature lion-claw headlights and minimal front intakes, design elements Peugeot says suggest pure-electric powertrains.
Peugeot confirmed that production versions of these concepts will likely be manufactured in China via its Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroen joint venture, underscoring the brand’s reliance on the Chinese market for future growth. Stellantis, Peugeot’s parent company, stated that its presence at the Beijing Auto Show reflects a clear expression of its global strategy, with China playing a central role in the brand’s worldwide development.
The Concept 6 takes the form of a large sedan in show-car guise, though Peugeot notes that any production version will probably offer a traditional sedan body style. The Concept 8, meanwhile, incorporates design cues from the Concept 6, including a split rear spoiler, illuminated Peugeot crest, and horizontally oriented LED lighting, while emphasizing clean surfaces, voluptuous rear fenders, and a pinched waist to convey a sense of luxury and presence.
Peugeot CEO Alain Favey previously indicated to Autocar that the company was “thinking about” a new halo SUV, a comment now aligned with the reveal of the Concept 8 as a potential preview of that future model. The brand also displayed a Polygon hatch concept at the Beijing event, further illustrating its design direction for upcoming electric vehicles.
These developments highlight Peugeot’s effort to re-enter the big-car conversation in global markets, particularly through electric vehicles tailored to Chinese consumer preferences and manufactured locally. The automaker’s strategy reflects broader industry trends among European manufacturers seeking to strengthen their position in the world’s largest auto market through joint ventures and localized product development.
