Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has asserted that the United States under President Donald Trump has no justification to deny Iran its nuclear rights, insisting that Tehran’s nuclear programme remains peaceful and in line with international agreements.
Speaking in remarks reported by Iranian state media and international news agencies, Pezeshkian rejected claims that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons, reiterating the country’s longstanding position that its nuclear activities are solely for civilian purposes such as energy production and medical research.
The Iranian president emphasized that any attempt to restrict Iran’s nuclear programme lacks legal or moral basis, particularly in light of Tehran’s continued cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its adherence to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), despite the U.S. Withdrawal from the agreement in 2018.
Pezeshkian’s comments come amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing diplomatic efforts to revive the nuclear deal, which aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear capabilities in exchange for sanctions relief. He warned that the U.S. Is attempting to repeat past patterns of withdrawing from agreements and undermining diplomacy, a stance echoed in recent statements from Iranian officials.
The U.S. Seeks to repeat past patterns and betray diplomacy.
Masoud Pezeshkian, Iranian President
The Iranian leadership has maintained that its nuclear programme is transparent and subject to rigorous international oversight, countering allegations from Western nations that Tehran may be seeking to develop nuclear weapons under the guise of civilian enrichment.
These remarks were made as concerns persist over the stability of the Middle East, particularly in relation to Israel’s security concerns and the broader implications of nuclear proliferation in the region. Pezeshkian also linked the defence of Iran’s nuclear rights to national dignity, stating that Tehran is seeking to end regional conflicts “with dignity” rather than through confrontation.
Analysts note that the revival of the JCPOA remains uncertain, with negotiations stalled over verification mechanisms and the sequencing of sanctions relief. While Iran has consistently denied any intention to weaponize its nuclear programme, the U.S. And its allies continue to call for stronger guarantees and broader negotiations that would include Iran’s ballistic missile programme and regional activities.
As of now, no formal breakthrough has been achieved in talks to restore the nuclear deal, and both sides remain entrenched in their positions. Iran insists on its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, while the U.S. Maintains that any return to compliance must be matched by verifiable constraints on Iran’s nuclear activities.
