Event Cancellation Due to Logistical Challenges
The PGA Tour has announced the cancellation of its 2026 season-opening event, the Sentry, originally scheduled for January 8-11. The decision follows the inability to secure a suitable alternative venue after the tournament was displaced from its long-time home at the Plantation Course at Kapalua on Maui due to ongoing drought conditions.
Despite assessing potential locations both within Hawaii and elsewhere, the PGA Tour cited “logistical challenges – including shipping deadlines, tournament infrastructure and vendor support” as insurmountable obstacles. This prevents the tournament from proceeding as planned.
A Historic Tournament with a shifting Location
The Sentry boasts a rich history, having first been held in 1986. It moved to Maui in 1999 and served as the Tour’s season opener continuously until 2013.The tournament then resumed its position as the first event of the season in 2024, coinciding with the PGA Tour’s return to a calendar-year schedule.
The tournament’s field traditionally comprises a prestigious group of players: the top 50 from the previous year’s FedExCup standings, alongside all PGA Tour event winners from the preceding year.
Sony Open to Begin 2025 Season
with The Sentry cancelled, the Sony Open at Waialae Contry Club in Honolulu, Hawaii, will now kick off the 2025 PGA Tour season from January 15-18.
