Michael Brennan became an unexpected viral sensation during the opening round of the 2026 Zurich Classic of New Orleans after removing his shirt to attempt a recovery shot from a water hazard on the par-5 18th hole.
Brennan and his partner Johnny Keefer had started their round on the back nine and were playing well until Brennan’s approach shot landed in the water. Despite the ball being visible in a shallow, muddy area near the green, Brennan chose to go shirtless and attempt the recovery rather than take a penalty drop.
“I was dropping it if I was just playing in a normal tournament, but Johnny had a birdie putt on the green. So I was, like, ‘Well, I guess You can try it,’” Brennan said, explaining his decision to attempt the shot.
The effort proved unsuccessful as Brennan barely made contact with the ball, sending it back into the water. His swing kicked up mud that landed on his bare torso and pants, creating a memorable visual that quickly spread across social media.
Despite the failed attempt, the incident did not hurt Brennan and Keefer’s standing in the tournament. Thanks to the best-ball format used in the Zurich Classic’s opening round, Keefer had already played his second shot to a position just off the green and was able to make par, preserving the team’s score.
Through 14 holes, the duo stood at 7-under par and were tied for sixth place. They had started strong with a 4-under 32 on their first nine holes before catching fire on the back nine with seven birdies, positioning themselves well for the remainder of the tournament.
Brennan later confirmed he had put his shirt back on after the episode and acknowledged the humor of the situation, particularly given that saving a stroke in the team format would not have significantly impacted their score since Keefer was already in position to make par.
The Zurich Classic remains the PGA Tour’s only regular-season team event, employing a best-ball format in the opening round that allows partners to rely on each other’s shots. This structure meant Brennan’s risky attempt, while entertaining, was not strategically necessary.
Brennan, 24, entered the tournament with one PGA Tour win to his name—the 2025 Bank of Utah Championship—and had accumulated approximately $1.6 million in career earnings. His performance alongside Keefer suggested the pairing could be a contender as the event progressed into the weekend.
