The biopharmaceutical company, which focuses on developing and commercializing medicines for significant unmet medical needs, intends to leverage Dr. Dinavahi’s experience to strengthen its clinical development and regulatory strategies.
Dr. Dinavahi joins the company with more than 20 years of experience in the biotechnology and healthcare sectors. Her professional background includes extensive work across several therapeutic modalities and areas, including nephrology, metabolic disease, autoimmune disorders, immuno-oncology, and transplantation.
Prior to her appointment at Ardelyx, Dr. Dinavahi served as the Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Atara Biotherapeutics. During her career, she has established a record of guiding medical programs through the entire development lifecycle, from early-stage research through Phase 3 clinical trials and final regulatory approval.
Strategic Focus on Unmet Medical Needs
The appointment comes as Ardelyx continues to target specific disease areas where existing treatment options remain insufficient for patients. The company currently focuses its research and development on two primary therapeutic areas:
- Chronic Kidney Disease with Hyperphosphatemia: This condition is estimated to affect the majority of patients with chronic kidney disease who are undergoing dialysis.
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C): A gastrointestinal disorder marked by constipation and abdominal pain, which is often linked to a significant reduction in patient quality of life.
As part of its efforts in the gastrointestinal space, the company has published a review article demonstrating that tenapanor provides rapid and meaningful symptom relief for patients suffering from IBS-C.
