Legendary drummer and vocalist Phil Collins has candidly shared his ongoing struggles with health issues that have substantially impacted his ability ⁣to play teh drums, a⁤ passion he’s dedicated his life ‍to. In a recent appearance on the ⁤popular ⁣YouTube drumming channel Drumeo, Collins revealed his current mindset regarding his drumming career,⁢ emphasizing a preference for stepping away rather than compromising his performance standards.

A Difficult Adjustment⁢ to a New Reality

Collins expressed that he is still coming to terms with the fact that he can no longer drum as he once did. “If ⁤I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything,” he stated, highlighting a profound respect for his craft and his⁣ own capabilities. He added a⁢ hopeful, yet realistic, caveat: “If I ⁢wake ⁣up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack of it.”

The emotional weight ⁢of this change is palpable. “I’ve spent all my life⁤ playing drums,” Collins reflected. “To ⁣be suddenly not be able to do that is a shock.” He admitted that the reality⁣ is “still kind of sinking in a bit.”

A History of Health Challenges

This isn’t the first time the genesis frontman has offered an update on his health. ⁢Back in 2021, Collins had already shared that his physical condition made it difficult to even hold a drumstick. during the Genesis reunion shows, where his son Nic impressively‍ took over drumming duties, Collins spoke about the frustration of his limitations. “I’m kind of physically challenged ⁣a bit which is vrey frustrating because I’d love to be‍ playing up ⁣there with my son,” he said. “I would love to but, you know, I mean I can barely hold a stick with this hand, so there are certain physical things that get in the way.”

The root of these⁣ ongoing issues traces back to a ⁢spinal injury ⁢sustained in 2007. This injury caused damage to vertebrae in his upper neck and resulted in nerve ⁣damage, profoundly affecting his ability to ⁤perform. This was visibly evident at Genesis’s final ever show in March 2022, ‍where Collins performed seated in a chair.

A Legacy Beyond‍ the Drum Kit

While his drumming⁤ days may be behind him, Phil Collins’s musical ⁢legacy is undeniable. His last album of original music was the soundtrack for Disney’s Brother Bear in 2003, with his final solo studio album, ‘Testify’, released a year prior.⁢ Despite the physical challenges, his impact on music continues to resonate, and his honest reflections offer a poignant look at the realities faced by artists when their bodies no longer cooperate with their artistic⁤ passions.
