Philanthropist Resigns from UK Arts Institutions Over Antisemitism
A leading philanthropist has resigned from all voluntary roles in British arts institutions. She cites a rise in antisemitism and a normalization of hate as her reasons for stepping down. Candida Gertler stated that her decision is not based on fear or defeat, but a principled protest against hate that compromises the core values of art.
Gertler expressed concern that when arts organizations permit prejudice, they betray marginalized communities and the integrity of artists and audiences. This announcement follows the Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art’s decision to remove Gertler and her husband’s names from a gallery and donor board.
An open letter signed by 1,100 artists urged the Tate to cut ties with certain donors, including Gertler’s Outset Contemporary Art Fund. The letter accused these funds of complicity in the Israeli regime and called for action against “artwashing” linked to genocide and apartheid.
Reports indicate that the Gertlers are friends with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Poju Zabludowicz, a notable donor to Jewish and Israeli causes, reiterated support for a two-state solution amid the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza.
