A Family’s Story of Loss and Heroism in Bogo City

In Bogo City, one of the hardest-hit areas, Ytang, 45, recounted the harrowing experience of the earthquake and the tragic loss of her daughter, Lady Jane. As the ground began to shake, Lady Jane, 45, rushed into a room, urgently warning her mother to protect her two-month-old baby brother.

Demonstrating extraordinary courage, Lady Jane threw herself over her family members in a desperate attempt to shield them from falling debris. Tragically, she was fatally struck on the head when a landslide partially buried their home.

It was love. She protected her mother, her siblings, her family, ytang said, grief-stricken, while viewing her daughter’s coffin during a funeral held outdoors under a makeshift tent on Thursday, October 3, 2024. Her baby brother survived with minor bruises, and her husband, Silvestre, sustained head and foot injuries.

Silvestre echoed his wife’s sentiment, stating, She saved us.she was the reason we lived, but she was the one who died.

Rescue Efforts and Government Response

Many of the victims perished when buildings and homes collapsed, either directly from the earthquake’s force or due to subsequent landslides. Rescue efforts were considerably hampered by persistent heavy rain and the widespread absence of electricity.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited Bogo City on Thursday, October 3, 2024, to assess the damage and offer support to the affected communities. He assured victims of financial assistance and pledged to provide food and water to the thousands of displaced families.Official gazette of the Republic of the Philippines
