Philippines Coach Confident of Beating Indonesia After Draw with Vietnam
Philippines Coach remains Optimistic Despite Late Draw Against Vietnam
Manila – Filipina coach Albert Capellas expressed disappointment after his team drew 1-1 with Vietnam in a crucial ASEAN Championship 2024 group stage match. Despite the setback, the Spanish coach remains confident that the Azkals can secure a semifinal berth with a victory over Indonesia in their final group game.
The Philippines appeared poised for victory after Jarvey Gayoso’s goal in the 68th minute. Though, Doan Ngoc Tan’s equalizer in the seventh minute of stoppage time snatched a point away from the Azkals.”I’m very sad. I know how hard the players trained, fought, and had a big desire to win. We deserved more than this,” Capellas said after the match. “The game against Vietnam was balanced, and we shoudl have won. But it didn’t happen. This is also a lesson for us. Three points seemed to be in our grasp, but they were taken away.”
The draw leaves the Philippines in fourth place in Group B with three points from three matches, all draws. Vietnam sits atop the group with seven points.
Despite the disappointment, Capellas sees the Vietnam match as valuable readiness for their upcoming clash against Indonesia in Solo on Saturday. The Philippines must win to advance to the semifinals.
He acknowledges that Indonesia, coached by Shin Tae-yong, will have a significant rest advantage. However, capellas believes his players’ fighting spirit remains strong.
“We’re going straight to the airport (after this match). We might not sleep tonight. I only have two days to prepare the team and we have a long journey ahead. I only have one day to train the tired players, then we face a crucial match against Indonesia, who have five days off,” Capellas explained.
“The players are still 100 percent motivated to keep fighting. We’ve reached the final stage of the group phase and still have a chance to win. If the Philippines plays like they did against Vietnam, we can beat Indonesia.”
“I know my players don’t have much rest, but they will fight with all their might to reach the semifinals. I’m proud of the whole team and I’m not worried about the next game,” Capellas asserted.
