Background
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated on Tuesday,December 16,2025,that Naveed Akram,24,one of the perpetrators of the Sydney attack, had been subject to intelligence checks by Australian authorities in 2019. At that time,he did not appear to pose an immediate threat.
Associations adn Prior Investigations
According to Albanese, Akram “attracted their attention as of his relationships with others.” Two individuals with whom Akram associated were subsequently charged and imprisoned, but he was not considered a potential suspect himself during the 2019 examination.
Possible Motives
Albanese indicated that the attack “would seem to be motivated by the ideology of the Islamic State.” The Islamic State, formerly controlling notable territory in Iraq and Syria, was defeated in 2019 but maintains sleeper cells within the region.
Current status of Perpetrators
Naveed Akram was arrested on Sunday following the attack. He remains hospitalized in a coma, under police guard, with serious injuries. His father,Sajid Akram,50,was killed by police during the incident.
