Philippines Reports 348 Chinese Aggressive Acts in West Philippine Sea
Philippines Reports Hundreds of Chinese “Illegal Activities” in Disputed Waters
manila, Philippines – Interior and Local Government Secretary Juanito Victor ”Jonvic” Remulla Jr. revealed Thursday that China has engaged in at least 348 “illegal, coercive, aggressive, and deceptive activities” in the West Philippine Sea between January and November of this year.
Remulla made the announcement during the 2nd Joint National Peace and Order Council (NPOC)-Regional Peace and Order councils (RPOCs) meeting for 2024. the meeting, which also saw President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in attendance, focused on maintaining peace and order in the region.
President Marcos reiterated the importance of non-escalatory approaches in the West Philippine Sea, emphasizing the need for diplomacy and peaceful resolutions. This stance echoes his earlier statements downplaying the need for Philippine navy warships in the contested waters.
“We are not at war,” President Marcos stated in a previous address.”We don’t need Navy warships. All we are doing is resupplying our fishermen, protecting our territorial rights.”
The President stressed that the Philippines has consistently avoided escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea.
China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea, a vital trade route responsible for over $3 trillion in annual commerce, overlap with territories claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. In 2016, an international arbitration tribunal in The Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines, declaring China’s claims in the South China Sea to have “no legal basis.” Though, China has refused to recognize the tribunal’s decision.
China Accused of “Illegal Activities” in Philippine Waters: An Interview with Expert
NewsDirectory3.com: Tensions are rising in the South China Sea as the Philippines reports a surge in Chinese “illegal activities” in disputed waters. To shed light on this developing situation, we spoke with Dr. Maria Celeste mendoza,a leading analyst specializing in geopolitical dynamics in Southeast Asia.
NewsDirectory3.com: Dr. mendoza, the Philippines has officially documented 348 instances of what they term “illegal, coercive, aggressive, and deceptive activities” by China in the West Philippine Sea this year alone. what is your assessment of this situation?
Dr. Mendoza: This revelation by Secretary Remulla is alarming, but unfortunately, not entirely surprising. China has been increasingly assertive in its claims over the South China Sea, frequently deploying its coast guard and maritime militia vessels to intimidate Filipino fishermen and disrupt exploration activities within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone.
NewsDirectory3.com: President Marcos has maintained a non-confrontational stance, emphasizing diplomacy and peaceful resolutions.Do you think this approach is sustainable given the escalation of these incidents?
Dr. Mendoza: President marcos’ approach prioritizes stability and avoiding military conflict, which is understandable given the potential for regional ramifications. However, a purely diplomatic approach may not be sufficient to deter further Chinese aggression. The Philippines needs a multi-pronged strategy that combines diplomatic efforts with a firm assertion of its sovereign rights and a strengthening of its maritime capabilities.
NewsDirectory3.com: The 2016 international tribunal ruling rejecting China’s claims in the South China Sea holds legal weight, yet China refuses to recognize it. How notable is this legal dimension in the current situation?
Dr. Mendoza: The 2016 ruling is a crucial legal victory for the Philippines, but unfortunately, it hasn’t swayed China’s position. china’s dismissal of the ruling undermines the rule of law and international norms. The international community must continue to pressure China to abide by its international obligations and respect the tribunal’s decision.
NewsDirectory3.com: What message should the international community be sending to China regarding these developments?
Dr. Mendoza: The international community must unequivocally condemn China’s aggressive actions and reiterate its commitment to a rules-based order in the South China sea. Support for countries like the Philippines, which are directly affected by China’s maritime expansionism, is crucial. This includes providing diplomatic backing, strengthening security cooperation, and promoting economic partnerships that empower Southeast Asian nations to resist coercion.
NewsDirectory3.com: Dr. Mendoza, thank you for sharing your insights on this critical issue.
