The Philippines and Canada have reaffirmed their commitment to a strengthened agricultural partnership, aiming to enhance food security, promote innovation, and expand trade between the two nations. A recent high-level meeting in Manila between Philippine Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. and Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Heath Macdonald solidified this collaboration.
Strengthening Ties Through technical Collaboration
The cornerstone of this renewed partnership is a joint statement on technical collaboration signed by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) and the canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). This agreement focuses on several key areas:
Plant Health: Collaborative efforts to safeguard crops from pests and diseases, ensuring healthy agricultural production.
Capacity Building: Programs designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of Filipino agricultural professionals. Scientific and Regulatory Advancement: Joint research and development initiatives to improve agricultural practices and standards. Innovation Exchange: Sharing of cutting-edge technologies and best practices to boost productivity and efficiency.
“Canada remains a vital partner in supporting our vision for a more globally competitive agriculture sector,” Secretary Tiu Laurel stated, emphasizing the importance of this collaboration.
Addressing Key Agricultural Challenges
Beyond technical cooperation, discussions between the two ministers covered critical issues impacting the agricultural landscape:
Food Security: Strategies to ensure stable and accessible food supplies for both nations.
Free Trade Negotiations: Exploring opportunities to further reduce trade barriers and promote agricultural exports.
High-Value Crops: Identifying areas for collaboration in the production and marketing of high-value agricultural products.
African Swine Fever (ASF): Sharing expertise and resources to prevent and control the spread of this devastating animal disease.
Growing Trade Momentum
The partnership is already yielding positive results, with trade between the Philippines and canada experiencing important growth. From 2020 to 2024, bilateral trade reached USD2.39 billion, peaking at USD568 million in agricultural trade in 2022.In 2024 alone, the Philippines exported USD148 million worth of agri-fishery goods to Canada - the strongest performance in five years, according to secretary Tiu Laurel. This demonstrates the increasing demand for Philippine agricultural products in the Canadian market and the potential for further expansion.
This strengthened partnership signals a commitment from both the Philippines and Canada to build a more resilient and sustainable agricultural future, fostering economic growth and ensuring food security for their citizens.
