Storm Makes Landfall in Luzon
Thousands of residents along the Pacific seaboard of the Philippines evacuated their homes on Saturday, October 26, 2024, as Tropical Storm fengshen made landfall. The storm triggered warnings of potential coastal flooding, according to reports.
Fengshen initially barrelled into the municipality of Gubat, located at the southeastern tip of the main island of Luzon, late in the afternoon.The government weather service reported wind gusts reaching up to 80 kilometers per hour (50 miles per hour).
Initial Impact and Evacuations
As of Saturday evening, authorities reported no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties. This was attributed to proactive evacuations already underway in hazard-prone areas and low-lying communities.
Ryan Estrellado, a rescuer in Gubat, told Agence France-presse via telephone that the area experienced “heavy rain and wind gusts, though they were not that strong.”
Forecast and Flood Risk
The Philippine weather office indicated that Fengshen was likely to intensify before making a second landfall in central Luzon on Sunday, October 27, 2024.
A “minimal to moderate risk” of coastal flooding was also forecast, with potential waves reaching up to 2 meters (6 feet) in height, as warned by the weather bureau.
