Phoenix Prepares to Host NCAA Women’s Final Four

February 24, 2026 – Phoenix is gearing up to host the NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four for the first time, an event expected to deliver a significant economic boost to the Valley and showcase Arizona State University’s capabilities in hosting major sporting events.

The official countdown began on Tuesday with a tip-off press conference held at Mortgage Matchup Center, the venue for the tournament. Representatives from ASU, the Phoenix Suns, the Phoenix Mercury and the City of Phoenix were present to generate excitement for the event, scheduled for April 3 and April 5.

Josh Bartelstein, CEO of the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury, expressed his enthusiasm, stating he would be fully focused on the women’s tournament during that period. “I’ll be here – I’m taking my Suns hat off and (putting) my Final Four hat on,” Bartelstein said. He highlighted the current excitement surrounding basketball, noting the ongoing March Madness season and playoff pushes.

Economic Impact Anticipated

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, speaking via video at the conference, emphasized the economic benefits the event is expected to bring. “Time and again, we’ve shown that nobody hosts big sporting events better than Arizona, and the Women’s NCAA Final Four will be no different,” Hobbs said. Organizers are promoting a series of free, all-ages events throughout the weekend to attract local fans alongside the semifinals and championship game.

The Women’s Final Four is anticipated to drive tourism and provide long-term economic benefits to local businesses, according to organizers. The event is expected to bring a substantial influx of visitors and revenue to the Phoenix area.

ASU’s Hosting Experience

Arizona State University is playing a central role in hosting the tournament. ASU Athletic Director Graham Rossini underscored the university’s experience in hosting large-scale events. “We’ve done these before, and many of the people who have been involved with those past events will be instrumental in this one too,” Rossini said. They understand how the NCAA works, what all goes into putting on something like this. It’s always fun, and it’s great for the community.”

ASU previously hosted the NCAA Men’s Final Four in 2017 and 2024 at State Farm Stadium. The Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale hosted the men’s and women’s NCAA golf championships from 2021 to 2023.

Several ASU administrators are involved in the preparations, including Mike Chismar, senior associate athletic director for operations and facilities; Christina Wombacher, senior associate athletic director and women’s administrator; and Doug Tammaro, senior associate athletic director for media relations. ASU women’s head coach Molly Miller was also present at the kickoff event. Her team is currently considered to be on the bubble for an NCAA tournament berth.

Approximately a dozen members of the athletic department are currently working on the lead-up to the event, with another two dozen expected to join once the teams arrive in Phoenix. The event is expected to be a smooth operation, leveraging ASU’s established experience in hosting national championship events.
