Photographer Captures Rare Combination of Night Sky Phenomena in One Image

Photographer Angel Fux has captured a rare astronomical combination in a single image, documenting both arms of the Milky Way Galaxy along with the Gegenschein, a faint glow caused by scattered sunlight. The image was captured from the summit of Dent d’Hérens, a peak located on the border of Italy and Switzerland near the Matterhorn.

The photograph features a double Milky Way Galaxy arch, a phenomenon that is only visible from Earth for a limited duration each year, typically occurring around the equinox. This specific alignment allows for the simultaneous visibility of the galaxy’s summer and winter arms.

Technical Requirements and Equipment

To achieve the shot, Fux utilized an astro-modified Nikon Z6 II paired with a Nikkor Z 20mm f/1.8 lens. The use of an astro-modified sensor is critical for this type of photography, as it allows the camera to capture specific wavelengths of light, such as hydrogen-alpha emissions, that are typically filtered out by standard factory sensors.

The pursuit of the image required a significant increase in altitude to escape light pollution and atmospheric interference. Fux had previously attempted to capture the phenomenon from Gornergrat at an elevation of approximately 3,000 meters (9,800 feet). While that attempt garnered attention, Fux determined that darker skies were necessary for a higher-quality result, leading her to the summit of Dent d’Hérens.

Logistics of Extreme Environment Photography

The summit of Dent d’Hérens reaches just under 14,000 feet. The environment presented extreme challenges, with temperatures dropping to approximately minus 28 degrees Celsius (minus 18 degrees Fahrenheit). Fux noted the inherent conflict between the equipment needed for high-altitude mountaineering and the specialized gear required for astrophotography.

Because the gear requirements are often incompatible in most situations, Fux coordinated with mountain guide Richard Lehner to secure a helicopter lift to the summit. This logistical solution bypassed the need for traditional alpine climbing gear that would have hindered the transport and operation of the camera equipment.

The Pursuit of Rare Celestial Phenomena

Fux first identified the double arch phenomenon two or three years prior to the May 8, 2026, report. She stated that once she understood the nature of the event, she became determined to photograph it.

The difficulty of the shot is compounded by the rarity of the alignment and the extreme conditions required for clarity. Fux observed that while more photographers have begun attempting to capture the double arch, the specific combination of altitude and timing remains a significant barrier.

The resulting image provides a detailed view of the galactic structure and the Gegenschein, demonstrating the capabilities of modified mirrorless camera systems when deployed in optimal, high-altitude atmospheric conditions.
