Piastri Seeks Fair Chance in F1 Title Fight with McLaren’s Norris
Updated june 26, 2025
Oscar Piastri, currently leading the Formula 1 championship standings, has stated he will not pursue preferential treatment over his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris. The two drivers had a minor collision at the Canadian Grand Prix, but Piastri insists they will continue to race freely.
Piastri holds a 22-point advantage over Norris, having secured five victories in the first 10 races. With 14 races remaining, including the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix, the competition remains fierce. Norris, however, failed to score in Montreal after an incident where he ran into the back of Piastri’s car while attempting a pass.
Following the Montreal race, Piastri said that he and Norris have already discussed the incident and cleared the air.He confirmed that mclaren’s “Papaya Rules,” which ensure equal terms for both drivers without favoring one as the number one, remain unchanged. Piastri does not anticipate any alterations to their racing approach.
McLaren has dominated this Formula 1 season, winning seven of the ten races. Max Verstappen of Red Bull has claimed two victories, while George Russell of Mercedes secured a win in Canada. despite McLaren’s strong performance and a meaningful lead over Mercedes in the constructors’ standings, Piastri’s lead over Verstappen in the driver standings is only 43 points, making the championship battle a tight one.

When questioned about his lead and the possibility of seeking preferential treatment, Piastri responded, “Your version of healthy is much bigger than mine. I just want, and we all want, a fair chance trying to win both championships. Especially in the drivers’ championship because ultimately it can only be one of us.”
He added, “I think the situation has to change dramatically to start having those conversations, and they’re a very long way away at the moment. So at the moment, all I can ask for is a fair chance to try and win the championship, and that’s what I want as well. No, I’m not willing to enter those talks at all.”
Norris separately commented that the Canadian Grand Prix incident has strengthened the team. he expressed feeling “good and excited” for the upcoming race weekend. “It is indeed part and parcel of sport and human to make mistakes, and we have become much better as a team as to how we learn from it and improve. And from that point, it was an unfortunate positive,” Norris said.
What’s next
McLaren aims to maintain it’s competitive edge at the Austrian Grand Prix, with both Piastri and Norris focused on securing valuable points in their pursuit of the Formula 1 championship. Piastri expressed confidence that the team will perform strongly in Austria, despite Canada being the first race this season without a McLaren driver on the front row or podium.
