If you are looking for a new trail to explore this year, consider a trip to Lycoming and Tioga counties in Pennsylvania. The 62-mile Pine Creek Rail Trail has been named Pennsylvania’s 2026 Trail of the Year by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).
The designation recognizes the trail’s rich history, cultural significance, and recreational opportunities, according to a statement released by DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “This designation will raise awareness about the wealth of outdoor experiences in the Pennsylvania Wilds — including the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon and the recently improved visitor center at Leonard Harrison State Park — while strengthening support for local businesses and generating lasting economic, environmental, and social benefits for the region,” Dunn said.
History of the trail
The Pine Creek Rail Trail follows a historic corridor originally used by the Iroquois Nation. Later, it was developed as a railroad in the late 19th century. Rail service along the corridor ended in 1988, and the pathway was subsequently transformed into a 62-mile non-motorized trail, completed between 1995, and 2007. The trail stretches from Jersey Shore in Lycoming County to Wellsboro Junction in Tioga County.
Economic benefits of trail use
The DCNR reports that the nationally recognized trail attracts more than 44,000 users each year, generating over $5 million in local economic impact. We see a significant recreational and tourism asset within the Pennsylvania Wilds, the Route 6 Heritage Corridor, and the Lumber Heritage Region.
How the trail earned top honors
The Pennsylvania Trails Advisory Committee designates a Trail of the Year to build enthusiasm and support for trails throughout the state and to increase public awareness of the value of Pennsylvania’s land and water trail network. The Pine Creek Rail Trail was selected for this honor in 2026.
The trail offers a scenic journey through the Appalachian Mountains, providing access to a wealth of recreational and cultural experiences. The 62-mile trail weaves its way through both Lycoming and Tioga counties, starting at a trailhead in Jersey Shore Borough.
According to the DCNR, the trail’s designation as Trail of the Year will not only highlight the outdoor experiences available in the region but also strengthen support for local businesses and contribute to lasting economic, environmental, and social benefits.
