Portugal Wildfires: Evacuations Ordered as Blazes Intensify Across the Country

Portugal is battling multiple wildfires across the country, prompting evacuations and a heightened state of alert. A particularly concerning situation has developed in the Piódão area, while significant fires continue to burn in Trancoso, Tabuaço, and Sátão. Authorities are mobilizing ample resources to combat the flames,with over 1,500 firefighters currently deployed.
Piódão Area Fires Force Evacuations
A rapidly escalating fire situation in the Piódão region has led to the evacuation of two villages: Foz d’Agua and Chãs d’Ofida.Local authorities,recognizing the increasing danger,advised elderly residents and those with reduced mobility to seek refuge in the church zone.
The Arganil City Council has activated the Municipal Emergency and Civil Protection Plan, anticipating further deterioration of the conditions in the coming hours. The speed of the fire’s spread and the vulnerability of the population have prompted a swift and decisive response.
Trancoso Fire: Largest Resource Mobilization
The fire in Trancoso is currently the moast significant,demanding the largest allocation of resources. As of 8:30 am on Wednesday, 529 firefighters, 170 vehicles, and two aircraft were actively engaged in battling the blaze. A thunderstorm that swept thru the District of guarda at dawn elaborate firefighting efforts, creating adverse conditions and necessitating reinforcements.This fire is part of a larger pattern of ongoing wildfires. The Vila Real fire, active for 11 days, continues to require 470 firefighters and 156 vehicles. The Tabuaço fire is also demanding attention, with 291 operational personnel and 93 vehicles deployed.
New Fires Erupt Across Portugal
Beyond the established fires, new outbreaks have been reported in several locations. Sátão currently has 128 firefighters, 40 vehicles, and an aircraft working to contain the flames. Smaller, emerging fires in Macedo de Cavaleiros and Sabugal are currently in the resolution phase.
Fortunately, the forest fire in the Ermida-Sale zone, near Santiago do Cacém, was brought under control at dawn on Wednesday. While the fire, which had three active fronts, was dominated by 2:30 am, a key traffic artery – the IC1 – remains closed in both directions as a safety precaution.Around 217 firefighters and 78 land vehicles remain on site to monitor the situation and prevent reignition. A separate fire near Cuba was also dominated around 1:42 am.
Traffic Disruptions Due to Wildfires
Several road closures are in effect due to the ongoing fire risk. Traffic is currently halted on the National Road (EN) 323, in both directions between Távora and granjinha in the Viseu district. This closure is a direct result of rural fires in the region.
A significant fire in Tabuaço, which began Sunday night in the parish of Távora and Pinheiro, continues to be a concern. As of 10:15 am Wednesday, 96 land vehicles and two aircraft are supporting firefighting efforts.
