Table of Contents
Pioneer announced the SPHERA in-dash receiver at CES 2024, offering a pathway to Dolby Atmos spatial audio in vehicles without requiring factory-installed compatible hardware. The receiver, available in the spring of 2024,will start at $1,300.
Expanding Dolby Atmos Access in Vehicles
Dolby Atmos, a popular immersive audio format available on platforms like apple Music and Podcasts, has historically been limited in automotive applications. Previously, experiencing Dolby Atmos through apple CarPlay required vehicles equipped with specific, compatible audio systems integrated by automakers. Pioneer’s SPHERA receiver aims to democratize this experience by providing an aftermarket solution.
How SPHERA Delivers Spatial Audio
Unlike systems requiring specialized Atmos hardware, the SPHERA receiver leverages a vehicle’s existing speaker configuration. pioneer states the system utilizes an optimized four-channel setup, working with standard front and rear speakers to create a spatial audio effect without the need for additional height or ceiling-mounted speakers. This approach significantly lowers the barrier to entry for drivers wanting to experience immersive sound in their cars.
Pure autotuning: Adapting to the Automotive Environment
Recognizing the acoustic challenges presented by diverse vehicle interiors, Pioneer has incorporated its proprietary Pure Autotuning technology. This technology automatically adjusts key audio parameters – time alignment, frequency response, and channel levels – to compensate for variations in vehicle size, shape, materials, and speaker placement. The goal is to create an optimal “acoustic center position” for the listener, ensuring a consistent and immersive audio experience regardless of the car’s interior.
Features and Connectivity
the SPHERA receiver boasts a 10.1-inch HD capacitive touchscreen and supports both wireless CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, alongside Bluetooth connectivity. A split-screen interface allows drivers to concurrently view navigation and access audio controls or other system functions, enhancing usability and convenience.
Installation and Availability
Designed for universal aftermarket installation, the SPHERA receiver can be fitted into a wide range of vehicles with minimal modifications. Pioneer announced the receiver at CES 2024 in January and plans to begin shipping in the spring of 2024, with a starting price of $1,300.
