More than 3,500 athletes from 93 countries are competing for medals at the Milan Cortina Olympics, and the Games have welcomed back a familiar face – Pita Taufatofua of Tonga. The 42-year-old, known globally as the “shirtless Tongan,” returned to the Opening Ceremony on February 6, 2026, but this time, he was fully clothed.

Taufatofua first captured the world’s attention at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, representing Tonga in the taekwondo competition. His traditional attire, consisting of a taʻovala – a mat wrapped around the waist – and his bare torso, quickly went viral. He has since become a symbol of Olympic spirit and Tongan culture.

What sets Taufatofua apart is his versatility as an athlete. He is one of a select few competitors to participate in both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Following his appearance in Rio, he competed in freestyle skiing at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, famously maintaining his traditional attire despite the frigid temperatures. He also competed in taekwondo and canoeing at subsequent Summer Games.

While he didn’t carry a flag at the 2022 or 2024 Olympics, Taufatofua continued to be involved in the Olympic movement, participating in the torch relay for the Paris Games. His return to the Olympics in Milan marked his fourth time carrying a flag in an Olympic Opening Ceremony.

At the February 6th Opening Ceremony in Milan, Taufatofua was selected as one of a group of nine athletes to carry the Olympic flag, designated as a “messenger of peace.” Notably, he traded his usual bare-chested appearance for a full black outfit, a departure from his previous Olympic traditions. This choice, while a change, didn’t diminish the significance of his role.

The selection of flag bearers, according to the Olympics account, recognized athletes “who embody the principles of peace, unity and solidarity that inspire the Olympic Movement.” Taufatofua joined other distinguished flag bearers including champion gymnast Rebeca Andrade, Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge, Cindy Ngamba, and Franco Nones.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Taufatofua is a motivational speaker and author. He shares his experiences and insights through books focused on self-improvement and achieving one’s full potential. This adds another dimension to his public persona, showcasing his commitment to inspiring others.

Taufatofua’s journey highlights the evolving nature of the Olympic Games and the increasing global recognition of athletes from diverse backgrounds. His story resonates with many, embodying dedication, cultural pride, and the pursuit of excellence. While his shirtless appearances initially garnered attention, his continued participation and commitment to the Olympic ideals have solidified his place as a beloved figure in the Olympic community.

His presence in Milan, even fully clothed, served as a reminder of the unifying power of the Games and the enduring spirit of the athletes who represent their nations on the world stage. The Milan Cortina Olympics, with over 3,500 athletes from 93 countries, provided a platform for Taufatofua to once again embody those ideals.
