Pittsburgh Penguins Launch New program to empower Young Girls in Hockey
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is taking a major step towards expanding hockey’s reach and inclusivity with the launch of the Pittsburgh Pennies Girls Hockey Program. This exciting initiative, developed in collaboration with the NHL and NHLPA, aims to empower young girls and foster a love for the sport.The program, named after the pioneering Pittsburgh Pennies women’s hockey team established in 1972, will recieve a nearly $300,000 investment over two seasons from the NHL/NHLPA Industry Growth Fund and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.
“This program builds upon the Penguins’ community hockey programming, ensuring sustainable growth and widespread adoption of girls’ hockey projects,” the foundation said in a statement Sunday.
The Pittsburgh Pennies, comprised of players ranging from ages nine to 50, competed in the Mid-Atlantic Women’s Hockey League across the Northeast and canada. Their formation coincided with the passage of Title IX, a landmark legislation that helped expand opportunities for women in sports.
The penguins Foundation plans to implement long-term programs in partnership with amateur hockey associations to increase hockey participation and excitement among young girls.
The program kicks off with a bang on Monday, December 2nd, with a sold-out Skills Clinic for local female players aged 10 to 12 at PPG Paints Arena from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
