Pittsburgh Penguins Struggle: New Concerns Rise in Sidney Crosby Era

Pittsburgh Penguins Struggle: New Concerns Rise in Sidney Crosby Era

November 26, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Sports

Pittsburgh Penguins: Struggling This Season

The Pittsburgh Penguins are having a tough time this season. They have fallen to new lows during Sidney Crosby‘s era. They recently won against the Sharks in a shootout after starting the game with a 3-0 lead but could not maintain their advantage. They then lost to the Lightning in overtime, marking their fifth loss after leading by multiple goals.

The weekend brought more disappointment with a 4-1 loss to the Jets and a 6-1 loss to Utah. The Penguins only had a 34% expected goal rate in that match. With such struggles, concern about the team’s future is high. Management must now reconsider their strategy to improve the team’s performance.

Red Wings Defense and Penalty Kill

The Red Wings’ defense and penalty kill show major issues, currently rated at 9/10 for concern. After trading Jake Walman, the team made minor signings, but these moves did not improve their defense. They have faced significant challenges in five-on-five defense and penalty kill situations.

Their penalty kill is particularly weak, allowing too many shots and goals. The Red Wings must improve defensively and find solutions to tighten their performance, especially when short-handed.

Nashville Predators: A Disappointment

The Nashville Predators are currently one of the season’s most disappointing teams, rated at 8/10 for concern. After an aggressive offseason, including extensions for star players and new signings, the expectations were high. Instead, they fall into a bottom-five spot in the standings and have just an 11% chance of reaching the playoffs.

New signings like Jonathan Marchessault and Steven Stamkos have not performed as expected. Special teams may shine, but the Predators struggle profoundly in five-on-five play. Management must reassess their approach to turn things around.

New York Rangers’ Lindgren-Trouba Pairing

The pairing of Ryan Lindgren and Jacob Trouba raises concerns, currently rated at 7.5/10. After Lindgren returned, the Rangers mixed their defense pairs, leading to issues. The pair struggles to defend against strong competition.

The coaching staff needs to see if they can balance the pairs without compromising defense. Strong goaltending can cover up some weaknesses, but the team must also find better defensive tactics.

Carolina Hurricanes’ Goalie Situation

The Carolina Hurricanes face goalie issues, rated at 6.5/10 for concern. With Frederik Andersen out for weeks and Pyotr Kochetkov injured, the team must rely on less experienced goalies.

Although the team has a strong system, it needs reliable goaltending to sustain success. Without a strong starter, the Hurricanes may seek help in the trade market if injuries persist.

Anaheim Ducks’ Offense Challenges

The Anaheim Ducks struggle to generate offense, currently rated at 6/10 for concern. After a bad previous season defensively, the Ducks prioritized defense in the offseason but sacrificed offense. They rank low in generating expected and actual goals.

The team needs to encourage offensive play from their younger players without neglecting defense. Finding balance is critical for long-term success.

Colorado Avalanche Goaltending Issues

The Colorado Avalanche face goaltending instability, rated at 6/10 for concern. They have allowed a league-high number of goals above expected. Despite solid defense, the goaltending has struggled under pressure.

Alexandar Georgiev has shown inconsistency, with too many poor performances. If reliability does not improve, the Avalanche may need to address their goaltending situation to stay competitive.

Edmonton Oilers’ Lack of Depth Scoring

The Edmonton Oilers need more depth scoring, currently rated at 5/10 for concern. Key players like Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are not producing as expected.

The Oilers rank in the middle of the league in scoring, but they need contributions from their depth players. Improving secondary scoring will be vital for the team’s success as they aim to build on past accomplishments.
