Pixar Announces New Film “Gatto” and Previews “Toy Story 5” at Annecy

Disney and Pixar continue too showcase their upcoming projects at the Annecy Animation Festival, using the event to deliver exclusive news and previews.
During a preview showcase, Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete docter unveiled “Gatto,” a new film from the team behind “Luca,” director Enrico Casarosa and producer Andrea Warren. “Gatto” is slated for release in the summer of 2027.
“Luca,” Casarosa’s directorial debut, was initially released exclusively on Disney+ due to the pandemic. Though,DisneyPixar has as returned to a theatrical release strategy,frequently enough paired with exclusive premieres. The Annecy audience might potentially be among the first to see ”Gatto” in June 2027.
“Gatto” returns to italy,this time Venice,and follows Nero,a black cat who questions his life choices after navigating the city’s canals for years. Indebted to a feline mob boss, Nero forms an unexpected friendship that could lead him to his purpose, unless the dark side of Venice consumes him first.
The proclamation of “Gatto” was met with enthusiasm, as “Luca” remains popular among Pixar fans. “Luca,” along with “Red Alert” and “Soul,” was re-released last year and is now streaming on Disney+.

Attendees at Annecy also saw a 27-minute preview of “Elio” from filmmakers Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and producer mary Alice Drumm. The preview showcased Elio and Aunt olga (voiced by Zoe Saldaña) traveling across the universe and encountering various creatures as Elio searches for where he belongs. “Elio” is scheduled to be released in theaters next week.
Docter, who was inducted into Annecy’s Walk of fame, also presented footage from “Hoppers” and a sneak peek at the first two minutes of “Toy Story 5,” set to release in the summer of 2026.
Docter confirmed Joan Cusack’s return as Jessie in “Toy Story 5” and announced new characters as the studio celebrates the franchise’s 30th anniversary. “Toy Story,” released in 1995,was the first feature-length computer-animated film and Pixar’s debut feature,released by Walt Disney Pictures.
As the supervising animator on the original “Toy Story,” Docter shared legacy footage from the film, which brought Pixar fame and started a franchise that has received 18 Academy Award nominations and won multiple awards, including Best Animated Feature for “Toy Story 3” and “Toy Story 4,” and Best Original Song for “We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3.”
Thirty years after “Toy Story” was showcased in Annecy, Docter seemed to echo the sentiment: “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.”
