Madison, WI – A local restaurant experienced an unusual and alarming incident when dozens of patrons, including several children, became unexpectedly intoxicated after consuming food prepared with contaminated cooking oil. The event,which unfolded over three days in late October,led to a temporary closure of the establishment and prompted an examination by health officials.
The Unforeseen “High”
The trouble began on October 22nd, when at least 85 individuals, ranging in age from 1 to 91, reported feeling intoxicated shortly after dining at the restaurant. Symptoms varied, with some experiencing dizziness, sleepiness, and anxiety.Seven individuals required hospitalization for their symptoms.
The investigation was triggered when one patron contacted Public Health Madison & Dane County, reporting a positive THC test without any known exposure, and noting they had eaten at the restaurant the day prior. This report initiated a deeper inquiry into the restaurant’s operations.
On October 24th, health officials contacted the restaurant’s owner, who promptly agreed to cease operations. The owner then revealed a crucial detail: the restaurant shared a kitchen space with another business that produced THC-infused edibles derived from hemp.
Further investigation uncovered that on October 22nd, the restaurant had run out of its usual cooking oil. The owner began using oil from the shared kitchen, mistakenly believing it to be plain canola oil, to prepare dough for various menu items, including pizzas, sandwiches, and other bread-based goods. A subsequent test of a large oil container found in the shared area confirmed the presence of THC.
No Criminal Charges,Temporary Closure
The local police department was brought in to assist with the investigation. their findings concluded that the THC contamination was an accidental occurrence, and no criminal charges were filed against the restaurant owner or any other individuals involved. Fortunately, no one suffered serious injuries as a result of the incident. Following a thorough cleaning and sanitization process, the restaurant was cleared to reopen on October 26th.
The Impact on Patrons, Including Children
while the situation may seem darkly humorous to some, the experience was far from pleasant for those affected. The patrons who became intoxicated included eight children. Three of these children experienced vomiting, and one even reported hallucinations. Thankfully, none of the children required hospitalization.
Recommendations for Prevention
The authors of the report on the incident emphasized the need for increased preventative measures, especially given the growing popularity of THC and cannabis-related businesses. They highlighted the particular risk when such businesses share spaces with traditional food establishments.
Clear Labeling and Secure Storage
“Regulations regarding practices such as standard, clear labeling and locked storage for ingredients containing THC, might decrease the risk for unintentional THC exposure at licensed food businesses,” the report authors stated. These recommendations aim to prevent future accidental exposures and ensure public safety in environments where cannabis products are present.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent protocols and clear separation of ingredients, notably in shared commercial kitchen spaces, to avoid unintended consequences for consumers.
