Plate Expectations: The UK’s 10 Most Coveted (and Expensive) Registration Numbers Revealed
The Most Expensive Private Number Plates in the UK
In the UK, private number plates have been a popular trend for a long time. These unique plates can be bought and sold, and are often used to convey messages, showcase one’s personality, or even display wealth and vanity.
Private number plates can be a combination of letters and numbers, allowing owners to get creative and introduce their name, initials, or a favorite number. However, some people view them as a waste of money.
Despite the varying opinions, private number plates can hold sentimental value for their owners and can be sold for a significant amount of money, ranging from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Plates with fewer digits are particularly valuable, with those featuring only two letters or numbers being the most sought after. These rare plates can sell for astronomical amounts at auction.

1. 25 O – £518,480 (approximately $98,700)
The most expensive private number plate ever sold in the UK is the 25 O, which was sold for an astounding £518,480 (approximately 98.7 million yen) in 2014. This plate was attached to a Ferrari 250 GTO, which once sold for an extremely high price at auction.
According to the UK Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), the plate is currently being fitted to the Ferrari LaFerrari hybrid hypercar.

For the price of that plate, you could buy 10 Audi TT RSs, but according to private number plate seller RegTransfer, the price has now risen to £750,000 (about 140 million yen, or the cost of 15 TT RSs).
2. X1 - £502,500
Coming in a close second is the X1. Little is known about the owner of the plate, but DVLA records show it is being used on a Mercedes-Benz hybrid purchased in March 2024.
The plate went for £502,500 in November 2012 – enough to buy around 10 Ford Mustangs - and it’s estimated that its value has almost doubled to £1 million since it was purchased in 2012.

However, we cannot confirm whether this plate has ever been installed on a BMW X1…
3. G1 – £500,000
Other notable mentions include the G1 plate, which was sold for £500,000. While we don’t have more information on this plate, it’s clear that it’s highly valuable and sought after.
