Jannik Sinner has stated that professional tennis players are not receiving the respect they deserve, refusing to rule out the possibility of athletes boycotting a Grand Slam over prize money disputes.

The world number one and four-time Grand Slam champion spoke in Rome on May 7, 2026, while preparing for his attempt to win a sixth consecutive Masters 1,000 title at the Italian Open. Sinner described the prospect of a boycott as tough to say, emphasizing that the core of the issue extends beyond financial compensation.

The dispute involves the top 10 male and female players, who are demanding a larger percentage of the revenue generated by the four Grand Slam tournaments. In addition to increased prize money, the players are seeking benefit contributions and a more significant role in determining operational areas, including scheduling.

Sinner argued that the value provided by the athletes is not being matched by the governing bodies.

It’s more about respect. I think we give much more than what we are getting back. It’s not only for the top players – it’s for all of us players, from men’s and women’s side.

According to Sinner, the top 10 men and women submitted a formal letter regarding these demands approximately one year prior, around May 2025. He expressed frustration that the situation has not moved toward a resolution since that time.

Sinner contrasted the tennis industry’s response with that of other professional sports, suggesting that high-profile athletes in other disciplines typically receive a response or a meeting within 48 hours of sending important correspondence.

Other leading players have echoed these sentiments. On May 5, 2026, world number one Aryna Sabalenka stated her belief that players will at some point boycott one of the major tournaments.

Novak Djokovic, the 38-year-old 24-time Grand Slam champion, also voiced his support for the players’ position. Djokovic noted that he welcomes the increase in conversations regarding the issue, stating that the current position of the players with the tours and slams is not where it needs to be.

While meetings have occurred between Grand Slam representatives and the players, significant gaps remain. There has been no progress regarding the request for benefit contributions.

Tensions further escalated in March 2026, when players rejected a meeting in Indian Wells intended to discuss the creation of a Grand Slam player council.

Sinner reiterated that while money is a factor in the discussions, the primary motivator is a feeling of being undervalued.

Of course we talk about money. The most important is respect, and we just don’t feel it.
