Plot to Disrupt Democracy: Five Transnistrian Residents Caught Planning to Torch Moldova’s Central Election Commission
Transnistrian Residents Detained for Alleged Arson Plot in Moldova
Law enforcement officials in Moldova have detained five residents of the Transnistrian region who allegedly planned to set fire to the front door of the Central Election Commission and several cars in the police parking lot.
A recent surveillance operation by Moldovan law enforcement officers led to the discovery of a suspicious individual taking pictures of cars in the parking lot near the Moldovan police building. The individual’s inability to provide a clear motive and inconsistent testimony prompted further investigation.
Subsequent monitoring revealed additional individuals taking pictures of cars near the Central Election Commission of Moldova and other government institutions.
On Thursday night, law enforcement officers apprehended several individuals who planned to set cars on fire in the police parking lot and the entrance doors of the Moldovan Central Election Commission. The suspects were found in possession of two bottles of flammable liquid, gloves, and clothing.
The suspects, aged between 18 and 42, are from the cities of Slobodzeya and Tiraspol in the Transnistrian region. During questioning, they revealed that they had been recruited by a man named Vladimir from Moscow, who promised $5,000 for setting fire to cars and buildings.
The suspects have been detained for 72 hours, and law enforcement officers are continuing the investigation to identify all parties involved.
This incident comes amid concerns that Russia has been channeling millions of dollars to influence operations in Moldova, particularly in the presidential elections and the referendum on joining the European Union.
