Plumtree Fugitive Re-arrested: Breaking News | heraldonline.co.zw

February 26, 2026 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor World

A fugitive wanted in Zimbabwe has been re-arrested in Plumtree, a town in Matabeleland South province, authorities confirmed on Thursday, February 26. The re-arrest follows a period where the individual, identified as Cabangani Mike Mathe, was at large after escaping from Plumtree Prison.

Mathe, 38, had initially escaped from Plumtree Prison in the early hours of Saturday, November 15th, 2025, triggering a large-scale manhunt. He was serving a 20-year sentence for rape, handed down on August 29th, 2025. He was also facing additional charges, including a pending court appearance on November 19th, 2025 for physical abuse, and a future trial for murder.

The circumstances surrounding Mathe’s initial escape raised concerns about security protocols at Plumtree Prison. Initial reports suggested he used a hacksaw blade to cut through window bars and then breached a razor-wire fence near the dog yard, ultimately escaping through an officers’ residential gate. However, accounts from inmates within the prison suggested a more complex scenario, casting doubt on the official narrative and hinting at possible collusion or negligence.

The re-arrest, carried out by members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Homicide unit, was prompted by investigations into Mathe’s identity which revealed he was a fugitive wanted in Zimbabwe. This discovery led to his deportation and immediate apprehension by Zimbabwean authorities. The details of the deportation process and the specific charges he faces in Zimbabwe have not yet been released.

The escape and subsequent re-arrest have instilled fear and confusion in Plumtree and surrounding areas, including Bulilima and Mangwe. Residents had been living in fear for over three months, fearing the presence of a convicted rapist and murder suspect at large. The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Meya Khanyezi, had confirmed the deployment of security teams immediately after the escape, but had not addressed the allegations surrounding the circumstances of Mathe’s disappearance prior to his re-arrest.

The incident highlights broader concerns about prison security in Zimbabwe. The ease with which Mathe reportedly escaped, utilizing tools like a hacksaw blade, raises questions about the effectiveness of security measures and the potential for corruption within the prison system. The ZPCS will likely face scrutiny regarding its procedures and oversight mechanisms.

The case also underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in tracking and apprehending fugitives who attempt to cross international borders. The fact that Mathe was able to evade authorities for an extended period suggests a degree of planning and potentially assistance from external sources. The investigation will likely focus on identifying any individuals who may have aided his escape or provided him with shelter.

While the re-arrest brings a measure of relief to the community, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within the criminal justice system and the importance of robust security measures to prevent future escapes. The ongoing investigation is expected to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding Mathe’s escape and the factors that contributed to his prolonged period at large.

The implications of this case extend beyond the immediate security concerns. It raises questions about the effectiveness of regional cooperation in combating cross-border crime and the need for enhanced information sharing between law enforcement agencies. The successful re-arrest, however, demonstrates the potential for collaboration and the determination of authorities to bring fugitives to justice.
