Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed an election rally in Siliguri, West Bengal, on April 12, 2026, as part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) intensified campaign for the upcoming state Assembly elections. The rally, held at Kawakhali Ground, was organized to support BJP candidate Shankar Ghosh and other party nominees in north Bengal.

During the event, Prime Minister Modi focused on a critical accounting of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration, pledging a full accounting of the party’s 15-year rule in West Bengal following a projected BJP victory. He also used the platform to call for the removal of infiltrators, stating Kamal khilao, ghuspethiya bhagao.

The Prime Minister further alleged that the TMC supports groups that have threatened to sever the Siliguri Corridor, claiming such support is a result of appeasement policies. He described the political situation in the state as a big khela (game) coming to Bengal.

West Bengal Election Logistics and Campaigning

The Election Commission of India has announced that more than 3.6 crore electors across 16 districts will be eligible to vote in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, which is scheduled for April 23, 2026.

In addition to the Prime Minister’s activities, other senior BJP leaders are active in the region. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is scheduled to address rallies in Sonamukhi-Bishnupur, Nandakumar-Tamluk, and Kanthi Parakala.

The campaign has been marked by significant friction between the BJP and the TMC. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP of attempting to polarize voters. During a public rally on April 12, 2026, she alleged that the BJP struck a Rs 1,000 crore deal with another party to divide Hindus and Muslims.

This accusation is tied to a controversy involving a viral video linked to Humayun Kabir. Chief Minister Banerjee claimed that the BJP initially termed the video as AI-generated only after the creator of the video asserted that it was real.

Broader Regional Election Context

The political activity in West Bengal is part of a larger cycle of Assembly elections in 2026 covering several Indian states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry.

Broader Regional Election Context

In Assam, the Assembly polls took place on April 9, 2026. The state recorded a historic voter turnout of 85.96% from its 2.50 crore electorate, surpassing the previous record of 84.72% set in 2016.

In Tamil Nadu, political tensions remain high. DMK president M.K. Stalin criticized BJP leaders for focusing on the law-and-order situation in Tamil Nadu while remaining silent regarding reported violence and crimes against women and children in BJP-ruled states. Meanwhile, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) is contesting in the Periyakulam (SC) constituency, marking a return to its southern origins in Madurai.

The AICC has indicated that Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders will soon begin campaigning in Tamil Nadu, though specific details have not yet been announced.
