PM Modi First Indian Leader to Address Knesset: Israel Visit Highlights

Modi Makes Historic Address to Israeli Parliament, Strengthening Strategic Partnership

Jerusalem – Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making a historic two-day visit to Israel, culminating in an address to the Knesset today, February 25, 2026. He is the first Indian Prime Minister to address the Israeli Parliament, a moment he described as an honour and a tribute to the strong parliamentary and democratic ties between the two nations.

Before departing for Israel, Modi emphasized the robust and multifaceted strategic partnership between India and Israel, noting its “remarkable growth and dynamism.” He expressed his confidence that the visit would further consolidate the “enduring bonds” between the countries and set new goals for their strategic partnership.

“I look forward to my discussions with Prime Minister Netanyahu aimed at further strengthening our cooperation across various domains, including science and technology, innovation, agriculture, water management… Defence and security, trade and investment, as well as people-to-people ties,” Modi stated in his departure statement. The two leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Defence and security cooperation is anticipated to be a key focus of the discussions, with potential collaboration on India’s indigenous air defence shield, “Sudarshan Chakra,” and Israel’s Iron Dome technology. Economic engagement, innovation, trade, and investment will also be high on the agenda, building on existing bilateral investment agreements and ongoing Free Trade Agreement negotiations.

The Prime Minister’s itinerary includes a visit to Yad Vashem, a poignant memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, and an innovation-focused event in Jerusalem. He is also expected to engage with members of the Indian diaspora, recognizing their role in fostering the India-Israel friendship.

The visit comes at a time of heightened regional tensions, with developments in Gaza and broader West Asia likely to be discussed. Netanyahu’s vision of a “hexagon” of alliances connecting India, Arab nations, African countries, and Mediterranean states is also expected to feature in the talks, potentially signaling a broader realignment of strategic partnerships in the region.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Modi arrived at the Knesset Parliament, where he was greeted by Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana with a warm welcome in Hebrew: “Jerusalem mein aapka swagat hai, Knesset mein aapka swaat hai (We welcome you to Jerusalem, we welcome you to the Knesset).”

During a brief exchange with Prime Minister Netanyahu, a lighthearted moment occurred when Netanyahu pointed out the colour of Modi’s attire. Modi responded with a smile, “It’s saffron,” prompting laughter between the two leaders. This exchange occurred amidst formal diplomatic discussions, briefly lightening the atmosphere.

The visit is expected to strengthen parliamentary, diplomatic, and people-to-people ties, setting new goals for the strategic partnership and advancing a shared vision for innovation, prosperity, and regional stability. Modi’s address to the Knesset is seen as a significant milestone in the deepening relationship between India and Israel, reflecting a growing convergence of interests and a commitment to a shared future.
