Prime Minister Modi’s Historic Visit to Nigeria

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Abuja, Nigeria, on Sunday. This is the first time an Indian prime minister has visited Nigeria in 17 years. The visit is part of Modi’s three-nation tour to strengthen India’s global partnerships.

Upon arrival, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome from Nigeria’s federal capital territory minister, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. Wike presented Modi with the “Key to the City” of Abuja. The Ministry of External Affairs noted that this gesture symbolizes the trust and honor given to Modi by the Nigerian people. Images of the warm welcome highlighted the significance of this visit.

During his five-day trip, Modi will hold high-level discussions to enhance the strategic partnership between India and Nigeria, established in 2007. The talks will focus on improving collaboration in the economy, energy, and defense sectors. Modi also plans to meet with members of the Indian community in Nigeria, who have been vital in strengthening ties between the two nations.

In his departure statement, Modi expressed his eagerness to meet the Indian community and friends from Nigeria. He mentioned that this visit is an opportunity to build on the partnership founded on shared democratic values.

After Nigeria, PM Modi will head to Brazil for the 19th G20 Summit. The summit takes place on November 18-19 in Rio de Janeiro and will include leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden.

The final leg of Modi’s tour includes a visit to Guyana from November 19 to 21. This trip marks the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Guyana in over 50 years, underscoring India’s commitment to strengthening relations with the Caribbean nation.
