Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has embarked on a four-day diplomatic mission to Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Qatar from April 15 to April 18, 2026. The tour is intended to secure vital foreign investment to anchor Pakistan’s economy and to position Islamabad as a mediator between the United States and Iran amid escalating hostilities in the Middle East.
The Prime Minister is accompanied by a high-level cabinet delegation that includes Syed Tariq Fatemi, Attaullah Tarar, and Ishaq Dar, alongside other senior officials.
Economic and Defence Agreements in Saudi Arabia
During the first leg of the tour in Riyadh, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to finalize significant financial arrangements. The State Bank of Pakistan has already received a $2 billion deposit from Saudi Arabia, and the Kingdom has pledged an additional $3 billion in support. Saudi Arabia has provided a long-term extension of existing deposits totaling $5 billion.
Beyond financial assistance, the visit served to cement a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement
between the two nations. This pact establishes that an attack on one country will be treated as an attack on both. This security partnership has been further reinforced by the deployment of Pakistani troops and fighter jets to Saudi soil.
Diplomatic Engagement in Turkiye
The diplomatic tour continues in Turkiye, where the Prime Minister is scheduled to attend the 5th Antalya Diplomacy Forum. As part of the forum, Sharif will participate in a Leaders’ Panel alongside other global counterparts to present Pakistan’s perspective on regional and international issues and to advocate for increased global cooperation.
On the sidelines of the forum, Prime Minister Sharif is expected to hold bilateral meetings with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and various other world leaders to discuss constructive dialogue and cooperation.
Regional Security and the Qatar Visit
The three-nation tour will conclude in Qatar on April 18. The visit to Doha, along with the leg in Saudi Arabia, will focus on strengthening bilateral relations and discussing regional peace and security.
A primary objective of the broader mission is to intensify diplomatic engagement ahead of a potential second round of peace talks between the U.S. And Iran. Pakistan is attempting to leverage its relationships with these regional powers to cool tensions and navigate the complex web of global crises currently affecting the Middle East.
Economic Context and Regional Risks
The timing of the tour coincides with significant economic pressure and regional volatility. While the Saudi deposits provide a temporary win for Pakistan’s economy, the Finance Minister has warned of potential economic fallout if the conflict in the Middle East escalates further.
The regional environment remains tense, highlighted by threats from Iranian military officials to destroy U.S. Ships in the Gulf. By balancing military solidarity with Saudi Arabia and diplomatic dialogue in Turkiye and Qatar, the Pakistani government aims to secure the foreign investment necessary for domestic stability while maintaining its role as a regional mediator.
