Thirty-seven fires raged across the nation following the hottest day of the year on Thursday. Four of those blazes were officially declared major incidents. In response to the escalating crisis, the Prime Minister deployed 100 military personnel to assist with operations, including a major deployment to South Wales. He also announced plans to commission dedicated firefighting planes similar to those used in Europe and the United States.
Nineteen Homes Destroyed on Millionaires’ Row

Investigators are currently examining whether a devastating blaze along Quarry Park Road and Brunswick Gate—a street known as local millionaires’ row—was ignited by a barbecue. West Midlands Fire Service confirmed that 19 houses were completely destroyed in the area, while another 18 homes sustained damage. Just yards away, about 100 firefighters battled a separate 40-acre fire near Stourbridge Golf Course.
Speaking to the BBC during his visit to the West Midlands, Mr. Burnham described the scene as “an eerie sight to walk past a home that was a family hub yesterday and is now completely gutted, smouldering.”
Retailers Facing Pressure to Pull Disposable Barbecues
With extreme dry conditions compounding the danger, the government urged retailers to halt the sale of disposable barbecues immediately.
According to the Daily Mail, officials are investigating whether celebrations by school-leavers and students burning old notebooks and coursework may have accidentally triggered several blazes. However, West Midlands Fire Service noted that formal investigations remain at an early stage and no direct evidence has been established against any specific group.
Law enforcement is already taking action elsewhere. Two people were arrested in Stoke-on-Trent on suspicion of arson after a fire swept through four residential houses.
Prime Minister Warns of Floods Following the Heatwave
The danger shows no sign of abating. Briefings from a recent Cobra emergency meeting in Whitehall indicate that a wet autumn and winter could follow the current heatwave, raising the specter that “after fire could come floods.”
